How to Convert Word to PDF

1

Select a Word document

Click the upload area or drop a .docx file.

2

Conversion in your browser

The document is parsed and re-rendered as PDF pages on your device โ€” no upload involved.

3

Download the PDF

Save a PDF that looks the same on every device and can't be accidentally edited.

How this conversion works, and what that costs

The document is read, laid out as HTML, rendered to an image and placed into a PDF. That approach converts anything without needing Word installed, and it reproduces what the document looks like rather than guessing at its structure.

It also means the output is a picture of your document. The text is not selectable, not searchable, and not readable by a screen reader. This is the single most important thing to know before converting, and it decides whether this tool is right for your file.

Why that matters most for CVs

The most common reason anyone converts a Word file is a job application, and that is exactly the case where a picture fails. Applicant tracking systems read the text layer of a PDF to extract your name, your employers and your skills. A rasterised CV gives them nothing, and a system that cannot parse a CV usually discards it.

The same applies anywhere a machine reads the file: invoices processed by accounting software, forms parsed by an intake system, documents indexed for internal search. If a program rather than a person will read it, export to PDF from Word itself, or from LibreOffice or Google Docs, all of which keep the text layer intact.

When it is exactly the right tool

For anything a human will simply look at, it is fine and often better than the alternatives. A one-page notice, a signed letter, a certificate, a design-heavy layout you want frozen exactly as it appears โ€” none of these lose anything by becoming an image, and all of them gain a file that looks identical on every device.

It is also the pragmatic answer when you do not have Word, when the file came from someone else and you just need to send it on, or when a form demands PDF and you need it in the next two minutes.

Formatting that shifts, and why

Word documents depend heavily on fonts installed on the machine that made them. When a font is missing, a substitute is used, and substitutes have different widths โ€” so line breaks move, a paragraph gains a line, and a two-page document becomes three. Sticking to widely available fonts prevents most of this.

Complex features travel worst: multi-level numbering, floating text boxes, headers and footers, tracked changes and embedded objects. Check the result page by page before sending it anywhere that matters, particularly the last page, where accumulated drift shows up first.

Privacy and file size

Conversion runs entirely in your browser. Contracts, medical letters and CVs are precisely the documents people convert most, and none of them are uploaded to a server here.

Because pages become images, the PDF is larger than one exported from Word, and the difference grows with page count. For a long document that is another argument for exporting properly from a word processor; for a couple of pages it is unimportant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert Word documents to PDF?+
PDF looks identical on every device and OS, can't be accidentally edited, and is the required format for most applications, tenders and official submissions.
Will my formatting be preserved?+
Standard formatting โ€” headings, paragraphs, bold/italic, lists โ€” converts reliably. Highly complex layouts with text boxes and embedded objects may simplify slightly.
Does it work with .doc files from old Word versions?+
The converter is built for modern .docx files. Save legacy .doc files as .docx in any Office app first, then convert.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?+
No โ€” parsing and PDF generation happen entirely in your browser. CVs, contracts and reports never leave your device.
