Why presentations get sent as PDF
A PDF opens identically everywhere, needs no presentation software, and cannot be accidentally edited by the recipient. For distributing a deck after a meeting, attaching slides to an email, or submitting them somewhere, that is exactly what is wanted.
It also fixes the font problem. A presentation using a font the recipient lacks reflows and looks wrong; once converted, the layout is settled and travels intact.
One slide, one page
Each slide becomes a page, so a deck of twenty slides becomes a twenty-page document. Slide dimensions are wider than paper, which is why converted decks are landscape and why printing them on portrait paper leaves large margins.
For a handout, several slides per page is the more useful arrangement, but that is a printing decision made afterwards rather than a property of the conversion.
Everything that moves stops moving
Animations, transitions and builds do not exist in a PDF. A slide built to reveal three points one at a time becomes a single page showing all three, which is usually fine and occasionally destroys the point of the slide.
Embedded video and audio are simply gone, leaving whatever poster frame was showing. A deck that depends on a video needs the video sent separately, and a slide that depends on a build may need rewriting before it is distributed as a static page.
Speaker notes
Notes are attached to slides and are frequently forgotten. Depending on how a conversion is performed they are either dropped or included, and both outcomes cause problems: dropped notes lose the explanation a reader needs, while included notes can publish comments that were never meant to leave the presenter's screen.
Checking which happened before sending is worth the moment it takes, particularly for a deck prepared collaboratively.
Slides are not documents
A deck designed to support a person talking is often incomprehensible without them — three words and an image convey nothing on their own. Converting does not fix this; it makes it permanent and portable.
If the slides will be read rather than presented, they usually need a version with more text or an accompanying summary. That is a content decision the conversion cannot make.
Fonts, text and privacy
Text is drawn as text rather than as an image where the conversion can manage it, so the result stays searchable and small. As with any PDF built from standard fonts, decks containing Turkish, Greek, Cyrillic or CJK text are worth opening in a viewer before circulating.
Conversion runs in your browser, so unreleased strategy decks and client presentations are not uploaded anywhere.
