How to Make a Photo Collage

1

Upload your photos

Drop several images to combine into one layout.

2

Choose a grid layout

Pick the arrangement and adjust spacing between photos.

3

Download the collage

Save the combined image ready to print or share.

Resolution is decided by the largest use

A collage is a new image built from several others, and its resolution is fixed at creation. Building at screen size and later needing it for print means rebuilding, because enlarging the finished collage softens every photograph in it.

The practical rule is to build at the size of the most demanding destination. A collage for a printed photo book needs far more pixels than one for a social post, and the source images need to be large enough to supply them.

Mismatched source images

Photographs from different cameras, screenshots and downloaded images rarely share dimensions or aspect ratios. Fitting them into a uniform grid means either cropping, which loses part of the picture, or letterboxing, which leaves visible gaps.

Cropping usually looks better, provided the crop respects the subject. Automatic centre-cropping cuts heads off portraits with some regularity, which is why the images that matter most deserve a manual crop before they go into a layout.

Layout carries meaning

A uniform grid says the images are equal. Making one larger says it is the main one and the rest are supporting. Neither is more correct, but a layout that gives equal weight to a hero shot and an incidental detail is telling the viewer something you did not intend.

Spacing does similar work. Tight gaps read as one composition; wide gaps read as separate images presented together. Consistency matters more than the specific amount โ€” uneven gaps look like a mistake even when nobody can say what is wrong.

Quality across the pieces

A collage is judged by its weakest image. One low-resolution or badly exposed photograph among five good ones is what the eye goes to, and enlarging a small image to fill its cell makes it worse rather than matching it to the others.

Colour consistency matters too. Photographs taken in different lighting sit together awkwardly, and a light correction pass on the individual images before assembling does more for the result than any amount of layout work afterwards.

Output and privacy

The finished collage is a single flattened image โ€” the individual photographs cannot be adjusted afterwards, so any per-image editing must happen first. Save the source images somewhere you can find them if the collage may need rebuilding.

Assembly runs in your browser. Family photographs, client work and product images are the usual material, and none of it is uploaded to a server.

How many images belong in one collage

Each additional image makes every image smaller. Four photographs in a square give each one a quarter of the area; sixteen give each one a sixteenth, at which point faces are no longer recognisable at normal viewing size.

The question worth asking is what the collage is for. A summary of an event tolerates many small images because the impression matters more than any single frame. A presentation of work does not โ€” there, three images shown properly communicate more than twelve shown as thumbnails.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many photos can I combine?+
From two up to a full grid โ€” the tool arranges them into balanced layouts. More photos mean smaller cells, so pick a layout that keeps each image readable.
Can I control the spacing and borders?+
Yes โ€” adjust the gap between photos and the outer margin. A small white gap gives a clean, modern look; zero gap creates a seamless mosaic.
What are collages good for?+
Trip recaps, before-and-after comparisons, product galleries for listings, social media posts and printed photo gifts.
Are my photos uploaded?+
No โ€” the collage is assembled entirely in your browser, so personal photos never leave your device.
